A Software Tester will look at the application he/she is supposed to test by (usually) reviewing some sort of functional document which describes what the application is and does and will generate test proceedures to test all of its functions. Example: an application has the ability to generate PDF files when the "Generate PDF" button is pressed. The tester will write a test procedure, or scenario, which will be a document containing statements similar to, "Test 0001 - PDF Export: Steps: #1) Press 'Generate PDF Button'. Expected result: PDF file will be created in the c:\foo folder". There are a number of software packages to assist in testing, Rational Robot being one example. A QA person will create Rational Robot scripts for automated testing--meaning that he/she writes scripts in the rational robot scripting language which will, in an automated fashion, execute all test scenarios against the software to be tested. A manual test script or procedure is one that the QA person has to test by hand. E.g. instead of Rational Robot programatically pressing the "Generate PDF" button the QA person has to move the mouse and press the "Generate PDF" button by hand.
