AQOTWF is the quintessential anti-war novel. It is fictional. That's key for you. You see, people have amazing resilience. We survive horrible events, always bringing some good out of it. That novel is pure fiction. So, the author was @liberty to totally trash everyone in it. All w/o needing to create any good from the carnage. You could try to contrast it w/a gungho, BS war novel (don't read them, myself). Or, you could compare it w/a factual novel, like Band of Brothers. Good Luck.

i quite liek Jane Eyre and it would be quite a good book to compare to Tess. Both are stories about young women who fall on hard times, but Jane is able to rise above her difficulties, whereas Tess is destroyed by hers. Jane is a more positive character who stands up for herself and has alot of character, Tess is more passive and fatalistic. She isn't really very bright, whereas jane is very sharp-witted. If you are going t odo another Hardy novel I would recommned Far From the Madding Crowd. It has a very different heroine from tess, Bathsheba, and is an exciting story. I personally prefer it to Tess but then I tend to prefer more spirited heroines, and also I prefer happy endings.

Hardy's heroines are unique in a way that they experience things that pull no punches. Jane Eyre is a book about her growing up and till she finds true love. You tend to sympathise with her because you know that she's suffered and want her to be happy. Now Tess' life is shown from the middle. You feel sad that she was not asked to dance by Angel or the other things that really were hard luck. Their ways of reacting are different. One is a romance while the other has romance and some reality (I guess) in it. Compare her to Eustacia Vye (Return of the Native), Bathsheba Everdene (Far From the Madding Crowd) or Sue Bridehead (Jude: The Obscure). They are set in a similar world.
