Ugh! Why do my parents suck?

Ugh! Why do my parents suck? Topic: Staying up late to do homework
June 20, 2019 / By Otis
Question: I'm 14, going to HS next year. I also have a little brother whose 12. This year, my bedtime was 8:30 which is fair although my friends stay up later. My parents told me that next year they were gonna let me stay up till 9 since I'll be older. Just recently though, teachers are saying that I'm "acting out" a bit much this year, so my parents changed their mind and now say that I have to go to bed at 7:30 next year because I'm being too "cranky". Ugh! What's worse, my little brother who usually goes to bed at 8 gets to stay up till 9 THIRTY next year because he's done well in school and my parents think he's acting very mature. I tried convincing my parents that I can handle it, but they just talked a lot about stuff from this year and said that I need to prove it by my actions first. It was right before 7:30, so the conversation ended with me getting sent up to bed. What would you do if you were my parents?! Would you let me stay up or just say "sleep tight!" ? Getting more bothered.... now they're doing this to me: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080505123530AARgRUd&pa=FYd1D2bwHTHzJbpmFew6Qt4t8Tc6uqLAiL2VY67S7AtMZg--&paid=asked&msgr_status= If any of you sympathize, anyway...

7:30 is too early for someone 14 unless you are a real pain in the butt when your up. What about your homework? Most kids start their homework at 7:30. Maybe your brother does better in school because he has more time to do his homework. Life isn't always fair nor are all parents.

I have three children, ages 17, 12, and 6. I do not believe in bedtimes for children over 11 years old. At that point, a young person is mature enough to decide for him/herself what time to go to bed. My 17-year-old has always been a girl who needs a lot of sleep. On school nights, she voluntarily chooses to go to bed at 9:30, even though it's not MY rule. She can't get up the next morning if she stays up late, and she knows it. My 12-year-old used to stay up until 9:30 or 9:45, but she's going through a huge growth spurt right now, so she's been turning in at around 8:45. Even if your parents choose to have a bedtime for you, 7:30 is ridiculous for a 14-year-old. What does an early bedtime have to do with doing well in school?

Look, all I can say is that high school is a big deal. I'm 18 and my parents still like me checking in, letting them know when I'm coming home and junk like that. The reason they do this is because they care about you. Sure; it seems like they are being complete idiots, but parents are there to take care of you. They love you and want to see you succeed. I know 7:30 is too early to go to bed and all that jazz, but rules that parents set keep you safe and prepare you for the real world because when you get out there you will, if you have gotten wiser, want to get as much sleep as possible. I am in the US Navy and I wake up super early. I need the sleep and one day, even if you aren't going to be military personnel, you will need that precious sleep, too.

Do what they say. Prove you're mature enough as a high-schooler to stay up til 9. Then, after you've gone a couple months, politely ask if they'll extend you til 8:30 or 9. You've got strict parents, by the way. My little brother (12) is up til 9 or 9:30 school nights, 11 or so weekends.

im the same age as you and am going to HS next year! But I have a sleeping disorder and it runs in my moms family so she understands. I usually dont go to sleep until two in the morning and then get up at 6:30 for school. I can function perfectly on two hours to 8 hours of sleep. Most days i get about 4 and 1/2. So i think seven thirty is HARSH. just lay in bed until your parents are asleep.

music now is generically produced to be sold to ignorant little kids that don't know what good music is. my theory is this: once mtv started airing videos the music business slowly started to shift to be more about looks. This came to its peak in the late 90's with the boy band/britney spears bullshit. once the record labels say that they could profit off of looks over talent, they started finding people that were marketable, rather than talented. once this happened they started making shitloads of money off of little ignorant kids buying whatever the new fad was. with all of that money they bought out the big radio stations. now that the major labels have an endless supply of money they started to pay to get their shitty music plastered on every radio station 3 times an hour, and all over mtv. from there it turned into putting those songs in commercials marketed towards kids. because young people (especially teens) aren't being taught what real music is, they turn to the radio, and like all of us at that age they thought "well if its on the radio, it's good" without any knowledge that it's money that gets airplay, not talent. these kids have nothing to spend their allowance money on, so they buy whatever trendy **** is thrown in front of them. when they don't have the money, they beg their parents. the parents want to shut the kids up, so they buy. these kids don't know any better especially when everywhere they turn the same bullshit is thrown in their face. the record labels make a killing off of each fad, because they make it, and promote it. if they have a song that they want to promote, they buy the airtime on the radio, and in all of the commercials. because of their endless cycle of money coming in, they can just use that same basic format for all of the music that they produce. thats why all the bullshit you hear sounds the same. these labels aren't ran by musicians, and lovers of music. they are ran by coorporate america to make a profit. these guys sit in skyscrapers and think about how they can exploit the next trend. once that trend (currently justin beener) is worn out, they drop that act, and promote another one. then when you add auto-tune to the mix, you don't need any talent at all. someone comes and write the music, and the dances, the "artist" goes into the studio, sings it, and it's tuned to sound good. they are industry puppets. it's a sad sad cycle.
