Topic: a-g requirments
June 16, 2019 / By Jordie Question:
I really, really, really hate art classes.
My reasons? It's not really art if your creating something that someone else wants you too. Since..you know, art is supposed to be a way to express YOURSELF.. and I had to take it from kinder-5th grade.
So do I absolutely HAVE to take it in high school?

It depends on where you are. In CA, the public and private schools make sure that the kids do their A - G requirements. Those are the requirements of the UCs and Cal States (state colleges), like UCLA, Cal State LA, etc. They state how many years of math, English, etc the student must take for admission into the college. One of those requirements is a full year of one Art. Not art, but one Art. My son is taking drama at his private school for the full year. They offer chorus, ceramics, drawing, painting, jazz band, dance, photography, etc.
So check with your state's college system and see what their requirements are. Likely art, like drawing or painting, won't be your only choice. Private schools also follow these requirements, although they may want more, like 3 or 4 years of one foreign language, instead of 2 years.
Some art classes actually encourage you to express yourself, it depends on the teacher.
Usually in high schools you don't have to take art. It's an elective, as long as you take something else...like dance or sculpture. Yeah I agree with you 100% that's why I don't take art at me school. You can even talk to your counsoler and they can give you alternative classes that you can take as well. Good luck :)
