WHYY WHYYY. please someone tell me what is happening to my art works as a Graphic Designer? Topic: Magazine web design showcase sites

Question: I used to live in Puerto Rico and I moved to California 3 months ago. I'm a Graphic Designer (Bachelors Degree) with around 3 years of experience. I used to been at least called for interview back in Puerto Rico, but in California, I've sent with no exaggerations more than 80 resumes to different companies, and no calls. NOTHING. Please, someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong, or some advices of what would be the best I can do. My online portfolio is www.exenicgraphics.com I'll really appreciate you critics and help, thanks. ^^

I agree with Jay and Artguy...... There are many reasons to not get a call back. For one your site is nice...but not professional..it has a kid like quality to it...or that what i learned in high school feel. I would work on a new design..Think professional designs....see here for examples.. http://themeforest.net/item/pacifica-htm... just click the live preview to see how it works.. http://themeforest.net/item/sthai-creati... the same here...click live preview The work you have on here is good..to Real good...but a lot of it is un-necessary...or needs direction....and the types of art and graphics displayed will depend on the field of work you are looking on getting into... Like the images of the Girls in the bathing suit...before and after thats good...that would appeal to magazine editors...and model companies. The artwork for Advent Children..a DVD cover is very nice..and has obvious appeal to the DVD industry print companies. Sometimes industry specific examples are best...and only finishes professional work should be displayed. Here is one of mine i plan to showcase for a print company selling art to the public at regular stores..where you can buy prints for your home... http://www.burningskystudios.com/images/... and these two examples .. one for a ship for a game I am helping to design..( the Space Fighter..) and the other for Company's Logo...Imaginary Company just an example... http://www.burningskystudios.com/images/hero-ship-rev1.jpg http://www.burningskystudios.com/images/kcs-media-logo.jpg .... Keep your Portfolio clean and easy to navigate...have the pages all integrate with each other...make sure the navigation area is easy to read...your current one..the font is hard to read. Provide information on the artwork you do and why it was done and who it was for. Details on what you do now...what you did in your previous experiences..or details on work performed ...and duties you had. Display more varied works...Digital, hand drawn, Html examples, Code examples if any, links to other sites related to your work..or that use your art, graphics, web pages, brochures, logos, etc. Recommendations from customers or former employers. If you want any other tips feel free to email me and I will help if I can.

Hi, There could be several reasons... 1. The condition of the economy. It's pretty bad. 2. You're style is to narrow, I see a lot of Japanese influence in a your work. This might be limiting you in some way. 3. You haven't sent a resume to the right company...YET. Keep plugin' away. 4. You really have stiff competition. You may have to be really persistent to let a company know that you are different. Maybe go in person to hand in your resume or fill out an application. Well these are a few reasons you might be having difficulties finding work. Just keep producing work and never give up, if you give up you will NEVER succeed. I hope this helps in some way. Good luck with it, Jeff

Your work is very good to excellent. But the one thing I would change is your home page it is to cutesy and childish looking Remember now this is only my point of view.If I was looking for a Graphic Artist I might pass yours by because of that reason. Try and make a more professional more adult looking site and that may help you in your profession.Remember just my point of view. It can't hurt you to try it.. Because as of late you are getting no where fast. Give it a try. And like I said in the beginning your work itself is very ,very good to excellent. Lots of luck to you . Jay

okay first off dont make the mistake of going to a tech school for graphic design. i went to the art institute of pa and dropped out bc their program was just not up to par... look at local ART universities that have graphic arts as a major... also i want to ask you.. what do you like about graphic arts? bc i am an artist myself and i thought graphic design was my ticket and i was dead wrong- just because i didnt simply understand the career itself... first off graphic design is a highly competative career, your first job might be producing images for other artists on adobe or photoshop (which is fine if thats okay w you- not trying to bash your dreams) also do you enjoy sitting and working on a computer??? and using photoshop or adobe? could you see yourself creating not just mag adds (hard to achieve that wonderful job) but grocery store adds, department store adds, newspapers, or buisness billboards... again not trying to bash you.... if this sounds good to you- then by all means GO FOR IT! :) but if you hesitate then think of other art careers! good luck
