In 2005 Katie delivers a box of old video tapes to her sister Kristi and her husband Daniel. In 2006, Kristi and Daniel's house is seemingly burgled and the tapes are found to be missing. In 1988, a young Katie and Kristi live with their mother Julie and her boyfriend Dennis. Kristi begins interacting with an imaginary friend named Toby. Dennis notices that since Kristi's friend appeared, strange things have happened in the house. Dennis and Julie try to make a sex tape, but are interrupted by an earthquake. While they look for the girls, the camera shows dust fall from the ceiling and land on an invisible figure in the room, before the figure moves and the dust falls to the floor. Later, while reviewing the footage, Dennis notices the strange incident. He invites his friend Randy over to view the footage, who suggests that Dennis place cameras throughout the house to capture any other incidents. That night, in the girls' bedroom, Kristi wakes up and begins talking to someone off-camera before going back to bed. When Dennis questions her about this the following day, Kristi tells him that it is her friend Toby. After more disturbed nights and strange occurrences, Dennis discovers a strange symbol in the girls' wardrobe. He finds the same symbol on a picture of women. Dennis explains to Julie that the symbol belonged to a cult which brainwashed young girls into having sons but Julie dismisses his claim. After Kristi falls ill, Julie and Dennis take her to the hospital. Katie is left with Randy to babysit. Katie asks Randy to play Bloody Mary with her. They go into the bathroom and say "bloody Mary" three times and turn off the light. When nothing happens Katie insists they try again. This time Randy is injured and when the lights come on, Randy has been cut across his chest. They try to leave the bathroom but something moves past the door, forcing them to hide in the bathroom. When Randy tries to leave a second time, furniture is violently thrown around. After Julie and Dennis return, Randy hurriedly leaves. Julie and Dennis get into an argument about the constant filming. Meanwhile the invisible entity terrorizes Katie and Kristi, lifting Katie by her hair. Katie tries to convince her mother to take them to her Grandmother's home but she refuses. The next day, Julie encounters strange activity in the kitchen, and she decides to take her family to her mother's home. Dennis sets up another camera in his new bedroom. At 1am, they are awoken by the sound of a car pulling up outside. Julie claims the noise is probably just her mother who has trouble sleeping. After hearing more noise, Julie goes to investigate. When she fails to return, Dennis goes to look for her. In the background the camera captures a shadowy female figure. Dennis returns and picks up the camera. He calls out for Julie and the girls but there is no answer. Realizing that no one else is in the house, he goes downstairs. Dennis notices a human silhouette behind a curtain, but upon checking behind it finds strange imagery on the walls, including the symbol that he found in the girls room. Noticing that the back door is open, Dennis goes outside to investigate. In the garage he discovers Julie's mother and several other women, all dressed in black. When they see him, Dennis flees back to the house, turning only to see the women slowly pursuing. In the house he finds Julie at the top of the stairs. As he approaches, he sees that she is dead, her body levitating above the floor. Her corpse suddenly drops, falling into Dennis and knocking him down the stairs. He picks himself up and sees Kristi, with the pair retreating into a closet. Something bangs on the door but eventually leaves. Dennis and Kristi leave the closet and find Katie by Julie's body. He slowly approaches Katie from behind and places his hand on her shoulder. As he does, Katie turns and unleashes an inhuman scream and throws him to the other side of the room, injuring his leg. Katie runs away. Dennis tries to crawl towards Julie but sees Julie's mother suddenly appear. His body is suddenly and violently contorted, snapping backwards and killing him. Katie reappears and runs to her grandmother who beckons to Kristi. As they head upstairs, Kristi calls to Toby. There is the sound of movement and a monstrous growl as the footage stops recording

While watching Paranormal Activity, dread was the one word that kept coming back to me over and over again. Every time the camera sat on its perch overlooking the lead couple's bed, I was gripped by an agonizing feeling of foreboding that what I was about to see was going to scare the pants off of me and bring me one step closer to not being able to sleep tonight. Which is why it's now 3:00 AM and I'm writing this review instead of resting comfortably in my own bed. I'm also pausing every few minutes to look over my shoulder in case someone -- or something -- might be lurking there. You are no doubt thinking, "Yeah, right. There's no way some no-budget, no-name docu-style flick is keeping ME up at night!" Well, my friends, I beg to differ. This here is the real deal. Simply put, Paranormal Activity is the most frightening ghost story of the year. I'd bet cash money nobody can watch the entire thing without saying at least three or four times, "That's some ****** up ****." Or, more accurately, "That's some seriously ****** up ****."

I personally thought it was pretty bad. I know it was made with a low budget and such but the plot was slow then it started getting fast and than slow again. By far one of the worst movies I've seen this year and one of the worst horror ones too.

How does having anemia stop you from watching scary movies? My doctor told me I am "severely anemic" and I have heart problems, and I watch scary movies all the time.

If you watched the first two, you know most of what happened in the first hour and a half. The last 15...no, you have to see them for yourself. Just wait for the DVD.

If you are using the dictionary definition of paranormal which is basically beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation it is easy to believe that there are unusual occurrences that science cannot explain. Often the assumptions based on scientific understanding of other occurrences are attempted to be used to explain the occurrence in question and are not applicable so when the attempt fails it is often considered that the occurrence did not actually occur. The government remote viewing program found that the methods used were not feasible for use and the program as it had been being attempted was cancelled. There are those who claim that being as the government cancelled the program it showed it was not possible. Being not possible and not useful are different considerations. Since that time newer experimentation with a different approach has been being worked with which would be strange if the government had deemed it not possible. Last year the government decided to attempt a different "psychic" experimentation program from a new approach based on experiences by US Service members in Afghanistan and Iraq. Based on the assumptions of the person designing the program I expect it to fail because some of the same assumptions were made in the 90's and found to be unproductive whereas what did show promising results are not being incorporated into the program. This program is based on events that occurred multiple times by different service members. Apparently the anecdotes have enough similarities in the claimed events that the government places some value on it being further researched. If results are ever released it can be expected that what information becomes declassified will be the official version just as it was with the remote viewing programs. Such information can hardly be considered complete and accurate. To claim paranormal occurrences do not exist is the equivalent to stating that science currently has all the answers now and if something cannot be currently controlled, tested and retested in the same manner each time it does not exist. If this were true there would be no need for continued scientific research, we would already have all the answers. Michel Verheughe, have you considered that things may happen but you may not be aware of them and if now you were to become aware it would not mean that they have not been happening but solely that you are now able to perceive them? You are correct that basic requirements are necessary for some things to happen but basic requirements are also necessary for some things to be experienced. You cannot expect to test a radio signal if you are using a flashlight and get verifiable results but we know the radio waves do exist. Even when something can be shown to exist it may not necessarily be understood or explained and therefore would still fall into the classification of paranormal. PhotonX, you say that you would need to experience it outside of the bedroom, no sleep, no drugs or trickery etc. No problem, and I would be willing to put my reputation on the line that I could have you experiencing and/or witnessing beyond a doubt things that are generally considered not possible based on current accepted scientific method. There is a catch though. You would need background checks, clearances, medical examinations, to sign waivers and confidentiality agreements. Then all you need is final approval and to be sent to the US Military installation where I am and we could start working with you. Basically the government would own you and all you could say about it is whatever the official version in the debriefing allows. To be honest you would probably still not understand how it works but at least you would have the experience.
