Question: Can I clean my cat's (glass) water dish with baking soda and a paper towel? I don't feel comfortable using soap in their dish. Or what do you think is the best way?

It depends on the category of the storm and the level of aid required to get things back to normal, but it's usually three to five days. Hurricane kits usually have about three days' worth of water (a gallon a day per person), but I've been in enough disasters to know that sometimes a lot more is needed. I always keep a ten day supply somewhere around my house, and I have filters and things just in case. You should just Google hurricane preparedness. You'll probably get a FEMA site, (.gov) and heaven knows nobody trust them anymore, but the checklist should be accurate enough. If you need to do a Google search but need to keep the search within the mentioned domains, just go to Google, type in the search terms, and then scroll to the bottom of the page until you see "advanced search." When you do an advanced search, you can put .edu or .gov into the domain slot. That will limit your results to acceptable sources.

The idea is to have at least three days of food and bottled water on hand before the hurricane. It may take that long before relief supplies get to you or before they get the water system working again. Personally I keep at least a week supply. I don't won't to have to depend on government relief or other people. If you need a source then do a google search. Search for "hurricane preparedness"
