Question for those of you that support right to own assault weapons? Topic: How to write argument questions
July 19, 2019 / By Aideen
Question: I keep hearing this argument from pro-assault weapons people that we need assault weapons to defend ourselves against a tyrannical government. Andrew Napolitano summed it up in an op-ed last week writing that "the principal reason the colonists won the American Revolution is that they possessed weapons equivalent in power and precision to those of the British government." So explain to me this, then. How do you plan to have "weapons equivalent in power and precision" to stealth bombers, UAVs, tactical nukes, tanks, bradleys, howitzers, helicopters, gunships, and long-distance missiles launched from undetectable submarines halfway across the planet? If you don't have a viable answer for that, then you need to admit that this mode of thinking is outdated and unrealistic in the modern world.

With good tactics and planning an inferior force can overwhelm a better armed force. However i agree that this argument is slightly weak and as a sole reason doesnt stand. My reason for supporting the right to own assault weapons is how much control should the government have? Yes assault weapons should require a license, background check, ect. But why should the government be able to say what i can and cant collect or own as long as im a sane tax paying citizen with no criminal background? How is it different from California trying to ban oreos? The only reason you can get oreos there now is because they changed their recipe to allow them to be sold in california. Obesity related deaths are very common so CA banned them for our "health and safety" saying they were saving lives by banning the foods that were causing many of these diseases and deaths. Or look at how many deaths from licensed hand guns are accidental or otherwise not in self defense. Does that mean the government shouldnt allow hand guns? What about hunting weapons? Hunting is no longer necessary or practical in current society since their are easier ways to control animals populations and provide food. Or maybe the government should just implant tracking chips to monitor us at all times for our own safety. There is no limit to what can be controlled and limited "for our own safety". Its a small jump from assault weapons to all weapons, and from guns to every other aspect of our lives.

Don't know. The problem you are having is with the "assault weapon" verb-age...the BATF cannot even define an assault weapon as the nomenclature was introduced by the left wing media.

There is NO SUCH THING as an assault weapon. Assault is an ACT, not an adjective. How do you plan to have "weapons equivalent in power and precision" to stealth bombers, UAVs, tactical nukes, tanks, bradleys, howitzers, helicopters, gunships, and long-distance missiles launched from undetectable submarines halfway across the planet? This is an argument to REDUCE restriction on weapons ownership, not to increase such restrictions.

The 2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States allows the people to keep and BEAR arms. It is kind of difficult to "bear" a stealth bomber or a tank. In the days when this republic was founded, the people weren't expected to "bear" canon either. Come, on, people. There is such thing as reality. Let's try to use it in our arguments.

You sure are willing to lay down and roll over when they come for your rights and freedoms aren't you. Your argument proves the need for assault weapons and more/better weapons. Not the lack of need for them. This URL shows the need and use of firearms. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgCiC6qTt...

Please see: The Viet Cong, the Taliban, the Libyan and Syrian rebels, the Iraq insurgency, et al. And tell me with a straight face that a guerrilla force cannot stand against a modern military.

uh oh. honey, think of Afghan insurgents.. do they seem like equivalent in firepower and accuracy? apart from that, the second ammendment is simply an excuse, the TRUE reason being "whythe hack you care what i have in my armory if i am law abiding citizen?"

Germans started off having the best, but when the American machine of war production was at its full speed, the US surpassed everybody else. I cannot even describe to you what our country would be like today if we banded together and acted like the American people of WWII did.
