I use my dresser for larger items, like sweaters and pants. I also use the bottom drawers to store the extra sheets and pillowcases for my bed instead of putting them in the closet. I use my chest of drawers for underclothes, socks, tank tops, shorts etc...Anything small and light.

If this is a real story, I would say the chest is haunted or possessed in some way. Get a priest to pray over it.

Do whatever makes sense to you. Things like socks and underwear usually go in a dresser drawer because they're small. Other than that, put things wherever they fit.

Yes. Remove the hardware, (knobs and handles) with a screw driver. You can change these later if you wish to update the look. Take the drawers out of the dresser and sit them on the back of the drawer so the drawer fronts can be painted without touching anything. Clean the dresser with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Lightly sand the surfaces with a small grit sand paper. Don't go too crazy with sanding the dresser... we are just looking to rough up the surface a bit. Now, prime the dresser with some KILZ primer. A very small can will do the trick. Allow to dry and add a second coat. Prime the drawer fronts the same way... two coats. Paint the dresser with some flat latex or semi-gloss paint. Allow to dry and add a second coat. Paint the drawer fronts the same way... two coats. Add your new handles and knobs... (or paint the old ones to make them look new and updated) ...then you have a brand new dresser! Good luck!

Here's a paint that will cover over laminate. Most paints won't cover laminate...not even a primer. (http://www.melaminepaint.com/) That's why this company came out with this paint. You may have to paint it a dark brown first and then dry brush a reddish brown over it to get the cherry wood look you want. By the time you go through all of this you may be ahead to just go to www.craigslist.com for you state and city and look for a free dresser or possible a dresser for just a few dollars. It will be alot easier for you. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
