Midwesterner looking for employment at sea. What is the best cruise line to work for? Best jobs? Requirements? Topic: A research study article on depression

Question: As a recent university graduate finding work locally has been tough. I live in a suburb of Omaha and I studied Communications, Journalism, PR, and Philosophy. I tried to join the Navy right after I graduated from community college a few years ago, but I was not accepted due to medical reasons. Ex. Anxiety - Depression that I feel I no longer suffer from. At the moment I feel I am a bit too old to enlist in the Navy, because I am now in my mid-20 s. What I am looking for is an opportunity to travel and work at sea. What would be the best cruise line to work for or what would be some other good options that I could possibly put my skills to use at? Being from the Midwest I really have little to no knowledge about what I could be doing working aboard a cruise ship, especially putting my education to actual use? Are there medical requirements other than a physical?

I took some of your questions in order to reply to them individually: What would be the best cruise line to work for There is no one good cruise line and the other ones are bad, the basics are all very similar. or what would be some other good options that I could possibly put my skills to use at? There are 200+ positions onboard a cruise ship, yet I do not see, with the information you provide a match in requirements. Relevant work experience is a must - so, what have you worked at which is the same position onboard a cruise ship? Is the setting you worked at similar to that of a cruise ship? You need to have work experience of at least 2 years which is relevant to the position you plan to apply for. Being from the Midwest I really have little to no knowledge about what I could be doing working aboard a cruise ship, especially putting my education to actual use? You can find that out by doing research online - below are some links as a good start. Are there medical requirements other than a physical? Most cruise lines will ask you about medication you take and see from there, if there is something they find troublesome. You mention Ex depression/anxiety and depression normally does not just go away. You should be aware, that working on a cruise ship is not a walk in the park - not only because of the long hours and 6 to 8 month contracts with no days off. It is also not easy to be away from home, friends, family, socialize only with co-workers, share tiny cabins, be reachable 24/7, work in a military kind of hierarchy and much more. I do not think any of us can tell you the best crusie line to work for. What you need to do is visit the cruise line web sites and look at the positions they offer and the job requirements. The web sites will answer many of your questions. Here's one to visit but you can go to the web pages for other cruise lines like Carnival, Princess, Holland America, and Celebrity (just to name a few) and there will be a hot link on the page that takes you to careers information. http://www.royalcareersatsea.com/ http://www.princess.com/careers/ You should also be aware that the cruise lines do also hire people to work at the departure ports AND also at their call and reservation centers around the country. So if you do not want to go to sea you can maybe get employment at one of theses locations. Just ask about them when you call the cruise line jobs number.

You are not too old for the military. I cannot see what job you would do on a cruise ship with your degree. Are you talented (sing, dance, etc)? The work schedule on a cruise ship is way harder than most people from the U.S. will tolerate.

What Mrsjvb said. They will hire American's for other niche positions but cruiselines know that Americans are not ideal employees - not willing to work long hours and days without time off for relatively low pay.

You need at least 2 years experience first and quite frankly they don't hire Americans for anything other than entertainment ( singers, dancers, musicians)
