Question: I need to write an essay about a narrative and discuss how rhetoric functions in the narrative. Can anybody explain what this means? Am I supposed to write how the narrative persuaded the audience?

Not necessarily. Rhetoric can be used to persuade people, but it can also be used to communicate, to emphasize, to imply, etc. The question is asking you to look at HOW the author told the story (not the content, but the way the content was presented), and think about how the way the story was told affected the story. For example, if you told the story of Game of Thrones by saying "OMG there were like these awesome dragons and people started whacking each other with hammers and this little short guy with no nose outsmarted everybody and...." that's one story, and if you tell it the way GRR Martin told it, it's another story, because they're told in different ways.

let a= price per cu ft and b= fixed ammount so you can make 2 equations out the bill info so: 1000a+b=90 1600a+b=105 solve the first equation for b and sub into second eqn: 1600a + 90-1000a=105 this gives a=0.025 dollars per cu ft and b=65 the cost equation is C=0.025x + 65 where x is the cu ft used if bill is 130 then: 130=0.025x+65 65=0.025x x=2600 cu ft

The amount paid is a fixed cost plus a charge for each cubic foot. let A be the fixed cost and B be the charge poer cubic foot. Then the total bill is A + Bx where x is the number of cubic feet used. Person x gets billed A+Bx=105 Person y gets billed A+By=90 The difference in the bills is B(x-y)=105-90=15 and B=15/(x-y) Since x=1600 and y=1000 then x-y=600 and B=15/600=1/40 or 2.5 cents per cubic feet. If person y uses 1000 cubic feet the charge per cubic foot is 1000*0.025=$25 If person y is billed $90 then the fixed part of the bill is $90-$25=$65

Ok, lets go step by step. (a) Lets call the yearly fixed amount M, and the charge per cubic feet x. A bill for 1000 cubic feet will be 90 = M + 1000x eq I and for 1600 cubic feet: 105 = M + 1600x eq II Subtracting eq II minus eq I 15 = 600x, so x=0.025 and M= 65 (b) The total cost is the fixed payment plus the cubic feet used: Y= # of cubic feet used so Cost = 65 + (0.025)Y (c) from our previous eq 130 = 65 + (0.025)Y 65 = (0.025)Y Y= 2600 cubic feet

1. Yes, a=0 because the points are on a straight line as you can easily check. 2. (5,2) and (5, -7) are on a vertical line and the other point is elsewhere.

The first set of points is a linear equation y = 3x + 5 The second is not a function because there are 2 values for x = 5
