Damascus steel. Damascus steel was a term used by several Western cultures from the Medieval period onward to describe a type of steel used in swordmaking from about 300 BC to 1700 AD. These swords are characterized by distinctive patterns of banding and mottling reminiscent of flowing water. The original method of producing Damascus steel is not known. Due to differences in raw materials and manufacturing techniques, modern attempts to duplicate the metal have not been entirely successful. Despite this, several individuals in modern times have claimed that they have rediscovered the methods in which the original Damascus steel was produced. Today, the term is used to describe steel that mimics the appearance and performance of Damascus steel, usually that which is produced by the techniques of crucible forging or pattern welding. The reputation and history of Damascus steel has given rise to many legends, such as the ability to cut through a rifle barrel, or cut a hair falling across the blade. No evidence exists to support such claims. But National Geographic and others have reported on research revealing nanowires and carbon nanotubes (which was the first time this had been seen in steel). Whatever the lost methods of making Damascus steel, of ore refinement and forging, they accidentally harnessed impurities and changes at the molecular level. Although modern steel still outperforms these swords[citation needed], the microscopic chemical reactions may have made the blades more resilient for their time. Other experts are unsurprised, and expect to discover such nanotubes in more and more relics as they are looked at more closely. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damascus_st...

In short, the SA, the Nazi paramilitary movement were getting too big for its boots. They were disappointed and restless after Hitler came to power, they were mainly working class under- educated men who expected jobs and power that failed to materialise. They also expected to become the new German army in place of the Wehrmacht. Hitler knew that the success of his regime depended on conservatives both in business and in the army but these conservatives, particularly in the army were feeling threatened by the unruliness and revolutionary ambitions of the SA. On 30th June 1934, on a pretext that the leadership of the SA were planning a coup, Hitler with the help of the SS arrested the leaders of the SA, including Ernst Roehm and had them shot. He had other people he regarded as enemies also murdered. After that the SA were brought under Hitler’s control and the threats to the army and Hiter's personal authority were removed. The series of killings that went on to 2nd July became known as the Night of the Long Knives’. Hitler himself coined the phrase in a speech soon afterwards he used to justify the action. In gratitude to Hitler the conservative generals pledged their allegiance to Hitler personally. The main outcome of Night of the Long Knives was threefold: 1) The army because of its gratitude became closer and more subservient to Hitler. 2) The SS became Hitler’s main internal security tool eclipsing the SA. 3) Hitler’s regime became more feared in Germany. The tragedy for the world was that other countries failed to draw adequate conclusions as to the possible ruthlessness of future Nazi foreign policy.

Night of the Long Knives refers to a night/morning in which Hitler wiped out his political rivals in the nazi party and also used the opportunity to murder external political opponents too. The Sturm Abteilung (SA) was a nazi paramilitary organisation that helped Hitler to power but by 1934 their leadership was seen as a threat to Hitler. For example, they wanted a socialist style revolution whereas Hitler could not do this without risking losing the support of the Army and the industrialists who helped him to power. The SA leaders, like Ernst Röhm, were 'summarily executed' on flimsy charges, and it was mostly conducted by the Gestapo and the SS, thereby consolidating their power.

Making Damascus knives is a very old art form that has more than one origin and can be traced back to nearly the age of steel itself. The India made blades, first seen in Damascus Syria, gave us the name. But it was the many layered Japanese swords and of course those Viking daggers with the composite blades with the chevron twists etc that gave us the method most used today to make Damascus knives.

Hard to beat a Buck hunting knife along the lines of their 119 Special. Cost about 50 bucks and has a full tang in case you damage the handle, you still have the tang to hold onto. I've never seen this happen but that's the reason for a full tang knife. Buck knives have a great guarantee and pretty much no questions asked. I've used mine for about 20 years now and along with my own deer, I have skinned and butchered the rest of the camps deer. So, I've cleaned about 130 deer with just that knife.

I would recommend a good Buck Knife is good for hunting and survival. They are very sharp and are good knives, I have several of them. I would lean towards buying an American one though because unfortunately they have started making some of the smaller ones in China which sickens me. They are really good knives so just make sure and look to see where it says it's made on the knife.
