Not always. I've seen some really strange and obscure books reviewed in newspapers and magazines from time to time. I'm not sure where you could find a list of books that are worthy of a review that didn't make the NY Times best seller list though.

Expecting Adam, Martha Beck, Ph.D. Warm, witty, about her experience at Harvard. The Overachievers, Alexandra Robbins; she returned for a second senior year of high school, and writes about the people she schooled with. The Great Divorce, C. S. Lewis; profound fiction. Alcatraz versus the Evil Librarians, Brandon Sanderson; his mom gave him the idea for this hilarious novel. Soul Mates and Twin Flames, Elizabeth Clare Prophet; romance discussed. Extraordinary Knowing, Dr. Elizabeth Mayer; her autobiographical account of an amazing adventure. Autobiography of a Yogi, Yogananda; good insight into a culture. Testimony of Light, Helen Greaves' account of post-passing conditions. Hope Rising, Kim Meeder's account of her healing work with teens and horses on her Crystal Peaks ranch. When Invisible Children Sing, Dr. Chi Cheng Huang; autobiography of this American's work with street children in Bolivia. Stay Alive, My Son; Pin Yathay's memorable account of his escape from Khmer Rouge. The Neverending Story, Michael Ende; warm fiction about a magical book encounter. A Wrinkle in Time series, L'Engle; favorite YA reading. Bridge to Terabithia, Paterson; uplifting. Nineteen Ways of Looking at Wang Wei, Weinberger and Paz; excellent understanding of how poems are written. Creation: Artistic and Spiritual, O. M. Aivanhov; good insights. Watch Your Dreams, Ann Ree Colton; summary of her decades of research into dream telepathy. The Master of Lucid Dreams, Dr. Olga Kharitidi; psychiatrist's adventures in Samarkand, more. Freakonomics, S. Levitt; really good introduction to practical economics. Hidden Camera, Zoran Zivkovic; award-winning recent light mystery.

State of Fear by Michael Crichton. This is an amazingly intelligent writer with a gift for fiction(Jurasic Park, Rising Sun, Congo...) In his writing, he has the rare ability to weave science and factual material into a book without sacrificing its entertainment value. The storyline and characters are compelling, making each title a gripping read that's hard to put down. The book I'm suggesting mixes the theme of global warming with a terrific plot that has no shortage of suspense and adventure. You'll not only get a terrific read, but an insight into one of the most important issues of our time.
