An Invitation to Hillhead Primary

City Buildings are due to hand over the new school building to the local education authority this month. To thank local residents for their understanding during this long build the construction manager David McEwan has invited us all for a final tour of the completed new school building together with a free buffet. This will be at 6pm on Wednesday 15th June. Please let Eric Kay know by e-mail (eric.kay@btopenworld.com) or call 0141 339 6609 if you intend to attend.

Gibson Street Gala 2011

It’s only a month away! Sunday 12th June – 12pm to 6pm

Gibson Street will be closed off for 6th time for an afternoon of live music, entertainment and street stalls. The GOW backcourt will again open its gates to the public to host a music stage and a refreshments tent. Visit the new Gibson Street Gala website for full information.

Second Tour of the New School

Update 2nd Feb 11: The school tour has now been postponed, due to interior lighting still not being available, until 7th March at 18:00, replacing the Open Meeting of that evening. We will have the usual Open Meeting in Offshore on the 7th February at 18:30 instead of the school tour.

Anyone wanting to be part of the second GOW visit to the new Hillhead Primary School on Monday evening 7th March, please let Eric Kay know by e-mail (eric.kay@btopenworld.com) or call 0141 339 6609. It’s a great opportunity to ask some questions like will the red brick work that’s clearly not in the lovely white & beige photo above stay?

The interior should have developed greatly since this photo was taken during our first tour back in October.

Winter Fair and Salvage Sale

Following the success of last year’s Winter Fair, we will be again opening up our shop for a salvage sale on the same day as the St Silas Christmas Gift Craft Fair. The cellar shop is located in the backcourt behind 3 Westbank Quadrant.

Tour of the New School

David McEwan, site manager of the new school construction project, kindly offered to give GOW residents a tour of the new school site at our 4th October open meeting. The site is progressing quickly, but was still very much a building site when we visited, as you can see from the few rather poor quality photos on offer here. There may well be another opportunity to visit the school at a later stage of construction at one of our future monthly open meetings.

The way we weave with words

Former GOW resident, Wendy Woolfson, has been extremely busy over the last year organising Scotland’s first Storytelling Symposium. Wendy visited a similar event a year ago in Denmark and was so inspired that she began planning for Glasgow and Scotland’s very own storytelling event.

‘This inspired week will host 6, week-long, professional storytelling practitioners’ workshops, led by national and international facilitators who are pioneers in their field’

As if this wasn’t enough, Wendy has set up Stories for Health, a not-for-profit organisation to support the delivery of creative storytelling projects and to provide a network for practitioners interested in this way of working. Added to all of this activity, she’s also a professional storyteller.

James Guthrie – A Hind’s Daughter

A most worthwhile exhibition to visit this summer is “Pioneering Painters: The Glasgow Boys 1880–1900″

Kelvingove Art Gallery presents the first major exhibition devoted to this influential group of artists since 1968. It will be the definitive Glasgow Boys exhibition, comprising around 100 oil paintings and 50 works on paper.

Until 27 September
Tickets £5 (£3 concessions)

Children and young people under 16 go free

“All the important artists associated with the group, including James Guthrie, EA Hornel, George Henry, Joseph Crawhall and Arthur Melville are represented.

Works from Glasgow Museums’ collections will sit alongside other major pictures brought together from public and private collections across the country.

The exhibition will celebrate the group and review its legacy. A condensed version of the exhibition will later tour to the Royal Academy of Arts in London.”
